WATCH: Old Footage Shows Detroit Pistons Head Coach Stan Van Gundy Might Have Better Handles Than Some NBA Point Guards
No one would accuse Stan Van Gundy, the caffeinated, raspy-voiced head coach of the Detroit Pistons, of being in athletic shape. However, if you get him out of his blazer and button down and into some shorts and a t-shirt and throw him a basketball, Van Gundy transforms into an entirely different person.

In a video that made the rounds on the Internet today, Van Gundy, wearing what appears to be an Orlando Magic team-issued shirt (which means the video is at least four years old), demonstrates how to put some tricky dribbling moves together to work his way up the court. It’s not clear if Van Gundy is doing the demo for Magic players or for youngsters at a basketball camp, but we see Van Gundy expertly dribble to his right, cross over between his legs to his left, then quickly bring the ball around his back to the right. He keeps going, executing a perfect spin move before dribbling the ball through his legs again.
It’s shocking to see Van Gundy bust out such smooth handles, and you can actually hear the audience’s surprise as the demo unfolds. However, Van Gundy did start at guard for Alhambra High School in California, and he even played some Division III college hoops at SUNY-Brockport. He clearly hasn’t lost his dribbling ability. Van Gundy could probably cross up a couple of guys on his Pistons roster with those moves.
