Zac Efron takes on the role of an ambitious young DJ named Cole Carter in the Hollywood nightlife drama We Are Your Friends.
At the beginning of the movie, Cole is an aspiring music artist hanging out with childhood friends and putting everything he has into creating a track that will rocket to the top of the charts. The 23-year-old suddenly has an opportunity to achieve success in L.A.’s electronic music scene when James, a charismatic but emotionally bruised older disc jockey, takes him under his wing.
Things get complicated when Cole is passionately drawn to his mentor’s much younger girlfriend, Sophie. As his feelings for Sophie intensify, Cole is faced with a confusing and heartwrenching dilemma. He is forced to choose between loyalty and love to discover the destiny that awaits him.
Starring as James is Wes Bentley (American Horror Story). In the role of Sophie is Emily Ratajkowski (Gone Girl). The cast also features Jonny Weston (Insurgent), Jon Bernthal (The Wolf of Wall Street), Jon Abrahams (The Astronaut Wives Club), and Glee’s Vanessa Lengies.
The film was directed by Max Joseph, who also co-wrote the screenplay. This is the first feature film for Joseph, known for directing a series of video shorts and the recent music industry documentary, 12 Years of DFA. Actress Meaghan Oppenheimer (The Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreams of Duncan Christopher) collaborated with Joseph on the screenplay.
We Are Your Friends heads to theaters nationwide on Aug. 28.
