‘X-Men: First Class’ Director Joins Espionage Thriller ‘I Am Pilgrim’
High-profile filmmaker Matthew Vaughn (X-Men: First Class; Kingsman: The Secret Service) has signed on to direct Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ big screen adaptation of Terry Hayes’s bestselling espionage novel I Am Pilgrim.
The story, about the efforts to protect America from a cunning terrorist, centers on “Pilgrim,” the code name for a man who doesn’t exist. Pilgrim is the adopted son of a wealthy American family who at one time headed a secret espionage unit for U.S. intelligence. He is called out of retirement to help with an unusual investigation, and he becomes caught in a race against time to save the nation from a terrible threat.
MGM motion picture group president Jonathan Glickman said, “We could not be more excited to have a consummate filmmaker like Matthew to bring I Am Pilgrim to the screen. His sensibility, coupled with Terry Hayes’s incredible story, gives us the ideal team to bring this character to the worldwide audience.”
In addition to directing the project, Vaughn will produce via his Marv Films banner. Also serving as a producer is Lloyd Braun, best known for TV series Deception and Alphas.
I Am Pilgrim was a runaway international success, translated into more than 30 languages. It became the breakout summer thriller of 2014. Terry Hayes will write the screenplay for this adaptation. The author is a former journalist and award-winning screenwriter. He is currently at work on a follow-up novel featuring the same protagonist.
Production on the film is expected to begin next year.
