News on Xbox’s Scripted and Unscripted Series
The highly anticipated science fiction drama Humans from Xbox Entertainment Studios (XES) will not premiere until 2015. This scheduling announcement disappointed those who were looking forward to Xbox’s first scripted program. Former CBS Television Studios president Nancy Tellem, who was hired to establish the studio in 2012, explained earlier this month that XES was still finding its footing and that it was challenging to figure out what resonates with an audience. Of the 12 projects known to be in production, the studio is only committed to six.
XES faces stiff competition from Amazon, Netflix and Hulu, whose set-top boxes are much less expensive than the $500 Xbox One.
Microsoft does have an edge in its ability to distribute shows to over 80 million Xbox consoles, with some content also available through Microsoft mobile and desktop platforms. However, it’s not clear if the programs will be available through Xbox Live.
Two unscripted series will air this summer: a live stream of the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tennessee, debuting June 13; and the docu-series Every Street United, starring soccer players Thierry Henry and Edger David, a nine-episode program that chronicles the search for the most talented street players in the world. Later this year, a six-part film documentary series entitled Signal to Noise will premiere. Exciting future projects include a Halo digital film series from producer Ridley Scott, expected by the end of the year, a live-action Halo adaptation directed by Steven Spielberg, and the E.T. Documentary.
