Young Thug Drops Mixtape; Lil Wayne Responds—Finally
Young Thug was slated to release his debut album Carter VI on Friday. However, since Lil Wayne voiced his displeasure and backed it up with the threat of a legal fight, the Atlanta-based rapper backed off the name, scrapped his official debut, and released a mixtape instead.
Titled Barter 6, the 13-track compilation features a naked Thugga on the cover against a dark red backdrop. The widely circulated image is what first caused Wayne to react to the Atlanta rapper’s controversial behavior. “Y’all let him know I said, ‘F*** ’em’,” said Weezy during the Jackson, Mississippi stop of his Release Partiez tour. “Stop listening to songs of n****s who pose naked on their motherf***ing album covers.”
Thug responded via Instagram by reiterating his love for Wayne with words that could easily be construed as taunting. “I understand that Lil Wayne is frustrated about his career, and I feel him on that,” he said. “But this is my idol. I wouldn’t ever in my life swap words with him or beef with him about nothing. This is a person that I look up to.”
However, Thug followed that up with two other clips that were confrontational, taking his obsession with Weezy to a new level. In the first, he used a female voiceover to threaten to kill Wayne and diss Young Money. And in the second, he announced plans to make his first performance for Barter 6 in Wayne’s hometown, Hollygrove.
It isn’t the first time Thug has been contradictory, and it likely won’t be the last. But it now seems safe to call this a beef. On Barter 6‘s “Can’t Tell,” which also features T.I. and Boosie, Thug raps, “. . . I’ll leave you dead and call it Dedication.”
You can download Barter 6 via iTunes. It also features collaborations with Young Dolph, Birdman and Jacquees.
