Young Thug Naming Debut Album ‘Carter VI’
When Young Thug got a taste of mainstream success, he was quick to name Lil Wayne as his inspiration. In subsequent interviews, he repeatedly called the Louisiana MC his idol. He even joked about naming his debut album, Carter VI, to show his admiration.
Apparently, he wasn’t joking. If his recent social media posts are to be believed, he really is going to call his long-awaited official studio release the sixth installment of Weezy’s album series.
Wayne has remained silent on the tribute, but it has drawn the ire of at least one member of the Carter family, Weezy’s oldest daughter, Reginae. “Is he trying to be funny with this Carter 6? ‘Cause it’s pretty childish to me. Try again if you’re even trying to get on my father’s level,” she wrote via Twitter. She then defended her statement, adding, “Listen. I usually stay in a child’s place, but that’s my father and I’ll stick up for him no matter what! It was not to be disrespectful. But you know what. I don’t have to explain myself! I don’t regret anything and I’ll repeat myself if I have to.”
Young Money rapper Flow also targeted the Atlanta performer during a recent YM cypher. “Young motherf***ing Money / These my motherf***ing brothers, not my hubbies,” rapped Flow, seemingly in reference to Thugga’s tendency to refer to his friends as lovers and hubbies. In the same cypher, Weezy took aim at his former father figure Birdman, who in recent months has toured with Young Thug under the moniker Rich Gang.
Thus far, a release date has not been announced for Carter VI. Incidentally we still don’t know when Wayne’s Carter V will arrive either.
