The comedy Masterminds features a star-studded cast that includes Zach Galifianakis and Owen Wilson. The movie revolves around David Scott Ghannt, a disgruntled night security guard who organizes what turns out to be one of the largest bank heists in the history of the United States.
The movie is based on a real event: a 1997 robbery in Charlotte, North Carolina, led by a Loomis Fargo & Company driver who conspired with his partners to steal $17.3 million. The gang initially succeeded but were later caught and arrested.
In addition to Galifianakis and Wilson, the film stars former Saturday Night Live cast member Kristen Wiig, whose big screen popularity continues following Bridesmaids and How to Train Your Dragon. Playing a hit man is actor Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses franchise). The cast also features Ken Marino (Marry Me) and SNL’s Kate McKinnon.
Directing the film is Jared Hess, best known for directing the hit 2004 comedy Napoleon Dynamite. The screenwriting team consists of several television comedy writers, including Chris Bowman (The Buzz on Maggie), Emily Spivey (Saturday Night Live), and Hubbel Palmer (Napoleon Dynamite series), along with Eastbound & Down collaborators Danny McBride and Jody Hill.
Masterminds opens in theaters nationwide on Aug. 14.
