On September 26, 2015, after colliding with Georgia's kicker on a kickoff return, former Southern University wide receiver Devon Gales was paralyzed from the waist down. Gales fractured his C6 vertebrae and has been confined to a wheelchair ever since.
Gales dedicated himself to his rehab and has never stopped working toward his recovery, which has culminated now in his being able to walk with assistance. A year ago, Gales could only stand by himself. Yesterday, he took 12 steps as shown in the inspiring video below.
Though there is no timetable as to when Gales could be walking on his own again, his incredible progress is as inspiring as it gets.
The University of Georgia Athletic Association has been incredibly supportive of Gales since the accident. In February, the program launched a drive to "Build a Dawg House" for Gales and his family. It will cost $500,000 to build the home, which will be handicap-accessible.
