In the sports drama Foxcatcher, Channing Tatum plays real life Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz. The movie, based on Schultz’s autobiography, reveals shocking events that occurred when Mark accepted an opportunity to spurn poverty and escape from the shadow of his more successful wrestling brother Dave (Mark Ruffalo) by taking up with eccentric multi-millionaire John du Pont (Steve Carell).
Du Pont invites Mark to move into his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Things spiral out of control when du Pont proves to be a bad influence, leading Mark into dangerous habits and destroying his confidence. The bizarre story turns tragic when du Pont eventually murders Mark’s brother.
Directed by Bennett Miller (Moneyball), the film features an impressive supporting cast, including Anthony Michael Hall, Sienna Miller, Vanessa Redgrave and Magic City‘s Brett Rice. The screenplay was written by E. Max Frye and Dan Futterman. Futterman’s most recent project was last year’s mini-series, Political Animals.
There’s considerable buzz about the dramatic change in Steve Carell’s physical appearance for the role of du Pont. In newly released stills, he is unrecognizable, with a large prosthetic nose and gray hair.
Foxcatcher hits theaters Dec. 20, 2013.
