King Arthur Epilogue Film ‘Man at Arms’ in the Works
Just as Guy Ritchie is at work on Knights of the Round Table, an origin picture about the legendary King Arthur, another film, described as an epilogue to the story, is also moving ahead. Titled Man at Arms, this Thunder Road project was actually announced five years ago, but is now picking up steam with the addition of director Jonathan Liebesman (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles).
One interesting thing about Man at Arms is that it focuses on life after the fall of Camelot, specifically centering on an older Sir Lancelot, who is repenting over his affair with Queen Guinevere and resolving to set things straight. Some observers are comparing the premise to Clint Eastwood’s popular 1992 western Unforgiven.
Ritchie’s competing film is intended to be the first in a seven-part franchise. There is no word yet on whether additional installments of Man at Arms are planned, but it seems unlikely since it is set post-Camelot.
The film is being produced by Basil Iwanyk (The Expendables franchise) and Bryan Brucks (Blended).
The screenplay, based on a concept from Brucks, was written by Jeremy Lott, whose work includes the upcoming adventure film Hood, about another legendary English hero, Robin Hood.
Liebesman is in demand now due to the huge financial success of his last two movies. His 2012 picture Wrath of the Titans raked in over $300 million worldwide, and last year’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles earned $485 million. The director is currently working on a fantasy TV series for MTV called The Shannara Chronicles, due to air later this year.
Man at Arms has a release date of December 13.
