A remake of the popular crime drama Scarface is finally moving forward. Screenwriter Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton) has been hired to write an updated version of the shockingly violent rags-to-riches 1983 film, which memorably starred Al Pacino as Tony Montana, a penniless Cuban immigrant turned powerful drug kingpin. The story was originally brought to the big screen in 1932 as a gangster flick starring Paul Muni.

The upcoming project is said to offer a new take on the story. It will be set in modern day Los Angeles and focus on the iconic character’s rise to power in the criminal world.

Herman is not the first writer to take a crack at this remake. Previous drafts were written by Paul Attanasio (Donnie Brasco) and David Ayer (End of Watch).

Award-winning Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín will direct the movie, which could serve as his breakthrough in American cinema. Larraín is best known for the 2008 feature Tony Manero.
