Jason Sudeikis ‘Fletch’ Reboot Gets a Major Shake-Up
There has been a major shakeup with the upcoming reboot of the popular 1980’s Chevy Chase comedy film Fletch. The movie, which is expected to be the first installment in a new franchise and possibly star actor Jason Sudeikis, has switched studios. The project was recently dropped by Warner Bros. and has now been picked up by Relativity Studios. The production company will team up with Boies/Schiller Film Group to revive this cult classic based on the original novels by Gregory McDonald.
Sudeikis, who was a contender to star in the film when it was at Warner Bros. is now in talks with the new studio. If the deal goes through, it will reunite the actor with his We’re the Millers producer Tucker Tooley.
The mystery book series included 11 novels, the first of which was published in 1974. The protagonist, I.M. Fletcher, is a journalist specializing in exposés, who is devoted to his work and is continually trying to avoid trouble from his ex-wives.
This new movie is expected to be an origin story. The working title is Fletch Won, which is also the title of the eighth novel in the series. It would make sense for the film to be based on this book, which tells the story of how Fletch got his first career break.
It is not clear how many installments of the new franchise are being planned. The original film, released in 1985, spawned the sequel Fletch Lives in 1989, which was successful at the box office but was largely panned by critics.
There have actually been attempts from various producers to do a third Fletch since the 90s. Given its enthusiastic fan base and commercial success, the franchise seems a perfect candidate for a reboot. In a 1999 interview with the New York Post , Andrew Bergman, who wrote the screenplay for the original Fletch, talked about its timeless appeal saying: “It’s so bizarre, but Fletch strikes a chord. There’s a group of movies like that in the ’80s, like Caddyshack, too, that captured a certain wise-ass thing.”
