Karl-Anthony Towns Has Morphed Into a Dunking Machine
Lost up there between the Minnesota wilderness and the Timberwolves’ 17-37 record has been NBA rookie phenom Karl-Anthony Towns turning himself into a dunking virtuoso. Although the Knicks’ Kristaps Porzingis has stolen much of the rookie spotlight playing in New York City, Towns is quietly averaging a double-double, putting up 17.1 points to go along with 10 rebounds per game.
Last night, Towns dropped a career-high 35 points on the Toronto Raptors, the hottest team in the Eastern Conference, using an array of post moves, drives down the lane and long-range jumpers. His best play of the night came on a gorgeous pass from point guard Ricky Rubio, who hit KAT in stride as the big man rumbled down the lane. Towns cocked back and threw down a huge dunk, something he did again later in the game, and something he’s been doing quite often of late.
Towns threw down the above tasty jam all over New Orleans Pelicans forward Dante Cunningham, displaying an impressive combination of strength and body control.
He wasn’t done dunking against the Pelicans that night either. He paid a little homage to Shaq by bringing his legs up to his chest while holding on to the rim, just like the Big Aristotle used to do.
If for some reason you needed another example of KAT’s newfound dunking prowess, here he is throwing down something fierce after slipping a pick and roll with Rubio against the Los Angeles Clippers a few nights back.
Karl Anthony-Towns could very well be the NBA Rookie of the Year, but the man should also get some sort of award for throwing down dunks the way they were meant to be jammed.
