Rap News Rundown: Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Gucci Mane
This past week, Lil Wayne revealed the cause of his recent health scare, Rick Ross attempted to clear up a lyric boasting about date rape and Gucci Mane continued his losing streak.
Lil Wayne Reveals Battle with Epilepsy
Lil Wayne cleared up the mystery behind his recent seizures during an interview with LA’s Power 106. According to the Young Money rapper, his trip to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center was not linked to a drug overdose. Good news, right?
“The bad news is, I’m an epileptic. I’m prone to seizures,” revealed the MC. “This isn’t my first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth or seventh seizure. I’ve had a bunch of seizures. Y’all just never hear about ’em.”
The most recent spell occurred rather rapidly and required medical attention. “This time it got real bad because I had three of them in a row, and then after the third one, my heart rate went down to, like, 30%,” he added. “Basically, I could have died. That’s why it was so serious.”
As for what brings these episodes on, the New Orleans-bred lyricist pointed to stress and an over-packed work schedule.
Rick Ross Calls Date Rape Lyric A “Misunderstanding”
A line from Rick Ross’s guest feature on Rocko’s “U.O.E.N.O. (You Ain’t Even Know It)” has angered the the masses, and many accuse the rapper of boasting about date rape. “Put molly all in her champagne, she ain’t even know it / I took her home and enjoy that, she ain’t even know it,” raps the MC on the song.
Fans launched an online petition requesting an apology from the rapper, and some are even calling for apparel giant Reebok to pull his endorsement deal.
Ross attempted to squash the uproar during a recent interview with a radio station. “Woman is the most precious gift known to man, you understand? It was a misunderstanding with a lyric, a misinterpretation where the term rape wasn’t used. I would never use the word rape in my lyrics,” said the rapper.
He also insisted that neither he nor anyone in the Maybach Music Group condones rape. But he failed to explain what exactly people were misunderstanding—since he surely wasn’t implying that one could not refer to “rape” without using the word. He also did not directly apologize for the lyrics.
Gucci Mane Denied Bond; Waka Confirms Beef
Gucci Mane’s recent bout of March Madness has continued to confuse rap fans. Undeterred by an arrest warrant for smashing a fan over the head with a bottle, the Atlanta performer reportedly assaulted yet another fan following a concert in Philadelphia. He was eventually arrested on the warrants and placed in the Fulton, Ga. county jail. The judge denied his request for bond, so he will remain in custody until his next hearing on April 10. In other news, Gucci’s long-time collaborator Waka Flocka Flame has confirmed that the duo’s relationship has taken a turn for the worse, and he doubts the two will ever work together again.
