We hope you’ve noticed the expansion of our gaming coverage over the past couple of months. We’ve highlighted blockbusters in sports, adventure and first-person shooter games; but we would be remiss if we didn’t also share a few old favorites. One top pick is Nintendo’s Metroid: Other M—can’t-miss entertainment for athletes who enjoy fast-paced adventure.
In 2007, the groundbreaking Metroid Prime trilogy concluded in Corruption. Fans of the classic series wondered where the developers would go next. How could the slick shooting controls possibly be topped? The producers made a bold choice, taking Metroid: Other M in a new direction, breaking the formula that made Metroid Prime consistently one of the highest-rated games on the market.
Unlike previous games on the Wii, all you need is a Wiimote. In the latest entry, with a simple flick of the Wiimote, you can control protagonist Samus Aran in either first-person or third-person mode. In third-person mode, you hold the controller vertically, and gameplay feels similar to the original Metroid fun back in 1986. But there are times when you have to use Samus’ cannon for precision shooting. To switch to first-person mode, you simply rotate the Wiimote and point at the screen.  If you’ve played the Prime trilogy, you’ll feel right at home operating the beam and missiles.
Metroid: Other M hit its first anniversary on Aug. 31. It’s still just as visually stunning as ever. Athletes who in their free time enjoy traversing unknown corners of the galaxy and blasting away at mysterious beasts will find it a worthy addition to their gaming libraries. Best of all, you can pick it up for a mere 20 bucks.
