Bigger, stronger and faster doesn’t always translate to better football players.
The Carroll High School football team (Southlake, Texas) does not possess world-class speed and athleticism, but their work ethic and the preparation they put into the off-season keeps the Dragons firmly entrenched as one of the elite programs in the Lone Star State.
Carroll’s summer training program, affectionately known as the “Dragon Maker,” is the most critical stage of their season, because it eliminates the greatest threat to the team’s success—selfishness.
Coach Hal Wasson says, “It’s hard to trust a guy who hasn’t trained as hard as you. That’s hard to do, and it can tear your football team apart.”
What makes Carroll’s summer training program unique is that its duration is undetermined—it can last anywhere from seven to 27 days. Wasson says, “We won’t finish until we feel that everybody has eliminated selfishness.”
The Dragon Maker is a rapid-fire circuit comprising bodyweight exercises and explosive lifts. The reps are fast and furious, forcing the players to stay focused. Once they complete a station, Wasson says, “they’ve got to know exactly where to go and get there with a great sense of urgency.”
Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons dropped by for a workout. Watch the above video to see how the star wideout fared in his bout with the Dragon Maker.
