‘Agents of SHIELD’ Spinoff in the Works
A new Marvel series is in the works at ABC, a spinoff of the network’s Agents of SHIELD series.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the last season of Agents of SHIELD may provide clues about what to expect from the new series: “Despite not having a planted episode this season, the concept for the SHIELD spinoff should become clear based on plot elements to come in the back half of its sophomore season.”
SHIELD executive producer Jeffrey Bell and series writer/producer Paul Zbyszewski are working on the show. The series is not expected to be officially greenlighted until the script is submitted. Sources say if the program does materialize, Zbyszewski, who has also worked on Lost and Hawaii Five-0, will serve as show runner.
It is unlikely that the new series will be introduced as a back-door pilot and air as a stand-alone episode of SHIELD.
Marvel Entertainment is a huge presence on TV at the moment. The studio has several shows on the ABC network already, and Netflix is launching its own Marvel franchise.
As for Agents of SHIELD itself, the third season reportedly has a good chance of being picked up, despite somewhat disappointing ratings. The ratings for Agent Carter are less than impressive, leading some to speculate that the potential new Marvel series could replace it. However, Carter shouldn’t be counted out quite yet, considering it has built an extremely loyal fanbase.
This spinoff will likely premiere on ABC in either the fall or midseason.
