Ben Affleck Reunites with ‘Gone Girl’ Writer and Director for ‘Strangers on a Train’ Remake
Following the huge box office success of Gone Girl comes news that Ben Affleck will reunite with the film’s director, David Fincher, and author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn for another complex suspense thriller—a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic film, Strangers on a Train.
Reportedly envisioned as a contemporary version of the original 1951 movie, this Warner Bros. project, with the working title Strangers, will feature Affleck in a role similar to the one played by Farley Granger. However, instead of being a tennis pro, the character is a movie star on an Oscar campaign.
One of Hitchcock’s best loved and most enduring films, Strangers on a Train was based on the novel by Patricia Highsmith. It’s about a chance meeting on a train between two strangers—tennis pro Guy Haines and the wealthy, charismatic psychopath Bruno Antony. During their conversation, both men admit they have someone in their lives whom they want to get rid of. Bruno offers to kill Guy’s ex-wife in exchange for Guy murdering Bruno’s father. They hope that by swapping victims they will foil the police, who will be unaware of the connection between them.
Flynn, who wrote the big screen adaptation of her novel Gone Girl, had positive things to say about her collaboration with Fincher, telling The Hollywood Reporter, “I think we both enjoy pushing the envelope a little bit. We like to tiptoe up to the line of acceptability and then maybe drift over it a little bit.”
Fincher and Flynn will also join forces for the HBO sci-fi mystery series Utopia.
