‘Blade Runner’ Sequel Gets Director and Harrison Ford
Filmmaker Denis Villeneuve (Prisoners) is negotiating to direct the sequel to Blade Runner. The original dystopian movie, set in 2019 Los Angeles, was released in 1982. Considering the popularity of the film, the sequel seems long overdue.
Many fans were undoubtedly thrilled to learn that Harrison Ford will reprise his starring role as Rick Deckard, a police detective chasing down machines called replicants in the first film. Ford has spoken highly of the script for the new movie, saying that it’s the best thing he has ever read.
Ridley Scott, who directed the original, is on board to produce the project along with Alcon Entertainment. Based on a novel by Philip K. Dick, the screenplay is being written by Hampton Fancher, who wrote the first film, and Michael Green, best known for Smallville and the forthcoming Prometheus 2. Scott also has a writing credit on the project.
Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson, who are producing on behalf of Alcon Entertainment, recently said in a joint statement: “We are honored that Harrison is joining us on this journey with Denis Villeneuve, who is a singular talent, as we experienced personally on Prisoners. Hampton and Michael, with Ridley Scott, have crafted a uniquely potent and faithful sequel to one of the most universally celebrated films of all time, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with this amazing, creative team.”
Filming is expected to begin in the summer of 2016.
