‘Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Trailer Revealed at Xbox One Event (VIDEO)
“It’s been ten years. You start to forget the things you should remember. And, you can’t stop remembering the things you should forget.”
These are the opening lines of the trailer for Call of Duty: Ghosts, unveiled yesterday at the Xbox One reveal. The video, which depicts a war-ravaged America, is stunning. Although details of the plot remain scarce, we know the game will go in a completely different direction than past Call of Duty games, as players take control of a Ghost, one of the few remaining American soldiers.
Activision CEO Eric Hirshberg introduced the trailer and described the title’s new take on the franchise. He promised advanced graphics with a new gameplay engine developed by Activision. He also noted that exclusive downloadable content will be available through Xbox One before any other next-generation console.
On-stage, Hirshberg said that his team was aware that people were expecting them to go the safe route with Modern Warfare 4. “We didn’t want to do the safe thing,” he said. “We wanted to do the right thing, and that meant eliminating as many creative restrictions as possible, so that our developers could create an entirely new Call of Duty for the next generation; and that’s exactly what we’re going to deliver with Call of Duty: Ghosts—an entirely new world, an entirely new narrative, an entirely new cast of characters, all built on our new next-gen Call of Duty engine.”
All COD titles since 2005 have operated on Infinity Ward’s in-house engine. The new engine will allow for some incredible possibilities, like multiplayer maps with weather events that change the overall terrain. Players will need to think ahead to navigate floods and earthquakes in order to stay alive and maximize their kills. You can catch a glimpse of some of these events in the trailer.
Unlike other COD games, Ghosts won’t be played through multiple main characters. Instead, the story focuses on one character. Storyline played a major role in game development, with Activision and Infinity Ward calling on Academy Award-winning screenwriter Steve Gaghan. According to Hirshberg, “It’s a good setting for the new consoles, because you’re going to have a dramatic setting and a high-stakes game, and characters will be able to really emote.” Throughout the trailer, we see the game’s characters experiencing all sorts of violence and tragedies, making us believe this title will deliver on its promise of emotionally gripping gameplay.
Watch the trailer and let us know what you’re most excited about. We’re promised SCUBA levels, natural disasters, massive set pieces and even a German Shepherd. The game’s Nov. 5 release date can’t get here soon enough.
