Cam Newton Has Officially Retired ‘The Dab’
This is a seminal moment in NFL history. When the history books are written and songs are sung celebrating Cam Newton’s career, they will remark that it was on this day, June 9, 2016, that Newton did away with his most infamous touchdown celebration and began a new chapter of his NFL career.
Appearing on “The Mac Attack” on WFZN radio in Charlotte, Newton announced that the “Dab”—the dance made famous by the rap group Migos and later adopted by Newton and performed after every touchdown he scored in 2016—would no longer be a part of his on-field routine.
“I have to put that aside,” Newton told the show’s hosts.

Newton’s post-touchdown celebrations drew criticisms from people who don’t enjoy seeing athletes demonstrably show that they’re having fun playing a game for a living; but that didn’t stop the former Auburn Tiger from Dabbin’ his way right to the Super Bowl. Newton recently discussed the real reason behind his dancing, stating that it’s because, “I’m telling everybody on that field, ‘I can do what I want to, when I want to do it.'” (Watch his explanation in the video above.)
If you think that Newton’s shelving the Dab means he’s done dancing, well, that is awfully naive of you. Newton’s just plotting his next choreographed move behind the scenes. “I have until September to find out,” he said.
Here’s hoping it’s the Running Man Challenge.
