Game On: MLB 2K10 and MLB 10: The Show
2K Sports and Sony are swinging for the fences with their newest baseball game releases. Between MLB 2K10, featuring Tampa Bays 3B Evan Longoria on the cover, and MLB 10: The Show, highlighted by Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer, we couldn’t decide who hit the grand slam for baseball gaming. Try both out and decide for yourself.
MLB 2K10 [2K Sports]
Available for: Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, DS and Windows PC
Release Date: March 2
The main match-up in 2K’s latest edition of their MLB franchise game is between pitchers and hitters. With total control of both, gamers have to react on the spot to try to gain an edge, similar to an actual at-bat in the Majors. Every pitch and swing counts when trying to win the big game. Stretch your fingers before picking up the controller, because every game is a battle.
Favorite New Features
Total Control Pitching allows users to outsmart batters and rack up Ks by placing the ball wherever they want. Controls are based on each pitcher’s personal mechanics; and although they are easy to learn, pitching a perfect game in 2K10 is just as hard as it is in the pros.
With all-improved Total Control Hitting, batters can time up their swings better and place the ball where they want. Hitters can use their power to swing for the fences, place the ball in the open field, attempt to go to the opposite field, or just try to make contact to stay alive.
MLB 2K10 allows gamers to access Inside Edge data to scout opponents and particular players. Learn their strengths and tendencies, and develop a way to exploit weaknesses. Knowing your opponent is key to users’ success on the mound and at the plate.
MLB 10: The Show [Sony]
Available for: PS3, PS2, PSP and PSP go
Release Date: March 2
Differences between the ’09 and ’10 versions of The Show are all in the details. For Sony, it was about giving the user full power over the game, and creating the real-life look and feel of an actual MLB game. From the catcher calling the game to actual MLB season schedules and match-ups to a new interactive training mode, you will be playing a fully customizable game and player. Detail is everything.
Favorite New Features
It’s been awhile, but Sony is bringing back all the festivities of the All-Star Break—including the Game, the Home Run Derby and the MLB All-Star Futures Game. Does your player have what it takes to get an invite? Or, will he be watching from his comfy couch at home?
In Road to the Show, Season and Exhibition Game modes, catchers try to signal in the right pitch; users either take the call or shrug it off for a new sign. Specifically, in Road to the Show, users who play behind the plate will make the calls and position themselves correctly to catch or block wild pitches.
In Custom Music, Yells, and Chants, a feature new to The Show, users will be given the ability to assign music or recordings to an entire team. Put tracks together for specific batters as they walk up to the plate, or record your friends chanting and play it during critical situations during the game.
