‘Furious 7’ Director May Helm ‘Robotech’ Movie
Among the most in-demand directors in Hollywood since the record-breaking success of Furious 7, James Wan already has a number of exciting projects on tap for the near future, and now it looks like he may be signing on for Sony’s big screen adaptation of the 1980’s animated series Robotech. According to reports, Wan is currently in negotiations to direct this sci-fi epic, centering on mankind’s efforts to fend off waves of alien invaders by utilizing giant robots, which were constructed by humans from technology recovered on an alien spacecraft that crashed in the South Pacific.
The initial invasion centers on a battle against giant warriors trying to retrieve “protoculture,” the flagship’s energy source. Two young pilots are ultimately responsible for the fate of the planet.
The film is being produced by Gianni Nunnari and Mark Canton, who previously teamed up on 300.
It seems that cinematic reboots of 1980’s era animated series are the next big thing. A few months ago it was announced that the Power Rangers were headed to the big screen and Jem and the Holograms is coming to theaters this October.
Before directing the blockbuster Furious 7, which has surpassed $1.3 billion at the box office, Wan was primarily known for his popular horror films The Conjuring, Insidious and Saw. He does not appear to be abandoning his horror roots anytime soon. In fact, his next directing gig is The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist.
Wan may also direct the comic book movie Aquaman and, not surprisingly, the producers of Fast & Furious 8 are hoping that he will return for that installment of the franchise.
