Johnny Simmons (Perks of Being a Wallflower) will star in the comedy feature Late Bloomer, which is inspired by a memoir by E! News correspondent Ken Baker titled Man Made: A Memoir of My Body, about Baker’s experience of going through puberty at the age of 27. Following surgery to remove a benign pituitary tumor in his late twenties, Baker experienced all the effects of puberty over a period of just a few weeks.

Baker discussed his experience and this big screen adaptation with E! News saying, “Having a skull-base tumor wreaking havoc on your body is not something I would wish on anyone, but honestly the experience mostly has been a blessing in disguise and made me a better person. The fact that the producers have assembled an all-star cast to animate a fictional version of my experience is simultaneously flattering, scary and surreal.”

The fictionalized adaptation centers on a sex therapist named Pete Newmans (Simmons) who, because of his arrested development, seems to be particularly adept at teaching restraint. His suffocating parents wonder why he doesn’t have a girlfriend and suggest that he date the girl next door. After his successful surgery, Pete falls in love and is suddenly forced to cope with overwhelming emotions.

Starring as Pete’s father is Oscar winner J.K. Simmons (Whiplash). His mother is played by Maria Bello (Prisoners). The cast also features Brittany Snow (Pitch Perfect franchise), Jane Lynch (Glee), Beck Bennett (Saturday Night Live), Ken Marino (We’re the Millers), Ileana Douglas (Welcome to Sweden), and Paul Wesley of the TV series The Vampire Diaries.

This film marks the directorial debut of Kevin Pollak (Kevin Pollak’s Chat Show).
