Lemony Snicket Series Adaptation in the Works at Netflix
An adaptation of the bestselling 13-volume Lemony Snicket book series titled A Series of Unfortunate Events is being developed by Netflix. The plot of this family entertainment follows orphans Violet, Klaus and Sunny Baudelaire as they struggle to uncover the secret of their parents’ death. The children must contend with many trials and tribulations along the way, including ill treatment at the hands of their evil Uncle Olaf.
Snicket, whose real name is Daniel Handler, commented on the adaptation of his novels by the streaming service, remarking in a statement: “I can’t believe it. After years of providing top-quality entertainment on demand, Netflix is risking its reputation and its success by associating itself with my dismaying and upsetting books.”
Netflix VP of original content Cindy Holland professed how universally loved the book series is, characterizing the world within its pages as “unique, darkly funny, and relatable,” adding, “We can’t wait to bring it to life for Netflix members.”
In collaboration with Netflix, the television division of Paramount will produce the live-action series. Paramount is the studio that created the 2004 mega-hit feature film adaptation, which starred Jim Carrey, Jude Law and Meryl Streep.
Handler will serve an executive producer of the series while continuing to keep busy as an author. His highly anticipated novel for adult readers, We Are Pirates, is scheduled for release on Feb. 3, 2015.
It isn’t clear when the project will debut, but the show has reportedly been put on the fast track.
