The NHL’s best do incredible things on the ice. And they are able to perform equally awesome feats in the weight room. That’s why they are among the best athletes in the world.
Check out the training of five elite NHL players, who are, in my opinion, among the fittest players in the league.
Max Pacioretty
Another Ben Prentiss athlete, Pacioretty is most remembered for almost getting his head taken off by Zdeno Chara. He’s not blowing up the goal-scoring race, but he has the explosiveness to blow by defensemen with his power. Ask Prentiss. He’ll tell you Pacioretty has the rest of the guys chasing him in the weight room—including some of the better players in the league. Check out the following video to see his freakish athleticism in action.
Tyler Seguin
At the Draft Combine in 2010, Seguin was the No. 1 prospect in the fitness rankings. He’s had some maturity issues off the ice, but in the weight room he is known as “The Phenom”—the reason the Boston Bruins selected him second overall. Check out the video below to see Seguin in action off the ice.
[youtube video=”sYqlw5rBCnE” /]Steven Stamkos
One of the best things that happened in Stamkos’s career was Gary Roberts taking him under his wing during his rookie season. A fitness fiend in his own right, Roberts saw a skinny runt with the potential to be a superstar.
After a few years of training with Roberts, Stamkos became one of the elite goal scorers in the NHL, thanks to his explosive speed and laser shot. Check out the following video to hear Stamkos and Roberts talk about training away from the ice.

Crosby is not just the best player on the planet because of his hockey IQ and skill set. He’s also one of the hardest working players off the ice. He’s been working with Andy O’Brien since he was around 12 years old. Rumor has it that he’s never missed a workout.
The guy’s already racked up multiple awards, a Stanley Cup and an Olympic gold medal. When you’re the world’s best player, you might fall prey to a little complacency. But his work ethic off the ice shows exactly why Crosby still sits atop his perch as the game’s best player. Listen to him talk about training off the ice in this video.

Pound for pound, Letang might be the strongest player in the NHL. He has to wear a 40-pound weight vest when performing Bulgarian Split-Squats because 120-pound dumbbells are too easy for him. That’s 280 pounds on one leg. Check the 1:12 mark of the video below to see it in action.
