If you are looking for proof that the workouts, size, strength and physique of NFL players have evolved dramatically over the past 20 or so years, look no further. The video above, titled Phil Simms’ NFL Workout, provides a more-than-slightly-embarrassing glimpse at the workout used by some of the best players in the NFL to prepare for the 1987 season. Watch Phil Simms, Eric Dickerson, Tony Dorsett, Todd Christenson and others hop, sweat and gyrate their way to their next Pro Bowl appearance. Those guys really knew how to push themselves, right?
The video is obviously some sort of ill-advised promotional attempt to ride the aerobics wave during its explosive growth in the ’80s—not an actual NFL workout. However, it is worth noting the physiques of the NFL players taking part. With their bird-legs-in-short-shorts appearance, these guys look more like today’s high school athletes than NFL players [mustaches excluded, of course]. The fact that these Hall of Famers were downright scrawny is testament to the advances in training knowledge and methods since the time the video was shot.
The video proves that training knowledge is power. If you don’t educate yourself on the latest and greatest training methods, you’ll be left in the dust, skipping around in tight shorts with a group of equally skinny friends. Avoid this by heading over to STACK TV to watch real videos of today’s top athletes training.
