Plan the Perfect Phone Call
The key to a meaningful and engaging recruiting conversation with a coach is to be prepared. When opportunity calls, have a list of questions available so you can speak freely and avoid awkward silences.
Before creating your Q-list, research the school and the coach. This will help you formulate good, relevant questions, which will elicit more in-depth responses. Keep your list handy, because a coach can call any time.
Take each call with confidence. Be polite, energetic and courteous, saying “yes, sir” and “no, sir.”
Use the following questions during your next call, or as inspiration to create your own talking points.
Academics
Expressing interest in academics is a great way to kick off a convo, because it reveals your commitment to being a student-athlete.
- What are the admission requirements?
- What are popular majors for athletes on the team?
- Is there a full-time academic adviser available to the team?
- What’s the team’s graduation rate?
Recruiting Plan
A coach’s responses to these questions will clue you in to where you stand on the recruiting board:
- Have you had a chance to see me play? If not, would you like me to send my highlight video?
- How many players will you be recruiting at my position?
- Have you offered scholarships to other recruits in my class or at my position?
- Have any athletes in my class accepted scholarship offers?
- Is there a good time for me to visit the school and meet the coaching staff?
Scholarship
Don’t ask whether you’ll receive a scholarship, but if coach introduces the topic, you can ask:
- How many scholarships are available for my class?
- What do I need to do for an opportunity to compete for your program and earn a scholarship?
- What types of academic scholarships are available?
- Are there other financial aid opportunities available for athletes?
Closing Questions
- What’s the next step I should take?
- May I schedule a time to reconnect with you by phone?
- Do you have any questions for me, or is there anything else
- I can provide that would help you evaluate me?
