See Which NFL QB Prospect Had the Strongest Arm at the NFL Combine. Hint: It Wasn’t Jared Goff or Carson Wentz
No quarterback threw harder at the 2016 NFL Combine than Paxton Lynch.
The towering 6-foot-7, 244-pound prospect out of Memphis achieved a top passing velocity of 59 miles per hour, ahead of Jared Goff and Carson Wentz. However, not much separated the three projected first-round picks. Goff’s fastest throw measured 58 mph and Wentz’s 57.
According to the scouting service Ourlads.com, only two prospects in the past nine years have thrown harder than Lynch at the Combine. Bryan Bennett threw 60 mph at the 2015 Combine, and Logan Thomas threw 60 mph at the 2014 Combine. Colin Kaepernick, one of the strongest-armed QBs in the NFL, hit 59 mph at the 2011 Combine.
The ability to throw the ball hard doesn’t necessarily ensure success for a quarterback—Bennett is currently a free agent, and Thomas is riding the bench in Miami—but it’s another piece of the puzzle that NFL teams will ponder prior to the Draft.
