Upcoming ‘Star Wars’ Spinoffs Will Be Origin Stories
Earlier this year, Disney revealed plans to release spinoff films from the Star Wars franchise separate from the planned trilogy. Those films will be origin stories, delving into the backstories of some of the series’ most beloved characters. Variety reported the news first, based on a recent Disney investors conference.
The news raises questions. How far back will the stories go? Will they be starting points for stand-alone franchises? And who will get the special origin treatment?
Entertainment Weekly reported that one spinoff will feature the backstory of a young Han Solo, occurring somewhere between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Another will be a bounty hunter adventure featuring Boba Fett, which takes place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back or The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. There have also been rumors that Yoda may get his own film.
Screenwriters Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan are believed to be working on scripts for the spinoff films, but no directors have been named. Who would you like to see take the reins?
Variety also revealed that Disney is focused on releasing a “great film” before exploiting merchandising opportunities. “We will lay the groundwork for that, and when the film comes out in 2015, we’ll be ready to blow it out,” said chief financial officer Jay Rasulo.
With the promise of a Star Wars film every year following Episode VII, Disney runs the risk of saturating the market. Rasulo didn’t seem concerned. “The sky’s the limit,” he said.
