Steve McQueen Biopic in the Works
A big screen biopic chronicling the life of legendary film star and pop culture icon Steve McQueen is currently in the works. A sign that this film, titled simply McQueen, is moving ahead was the news earlier this year that financing has been secured through a deal between Lake Forest Entertainment and The Exchange.
Given McQueen’s enduring popularity and timeless appeal—he was dubbed “The King of Cool”—it is not surprising that this project has drawn the interest of many high-profile actors and filmmakers, including Channing Tatum, Ryan Gosling, Avengers star Jeremy Renner and director James Gray (We Own the Night).
The movie will be partially based on the biography, Steve McQueen: The Life and Legend of a Hollywood Icon, by Marshall Terrill, a meticulously researched book relating the actor’s rise from a troubled Midwestern teen in reform schools to one of the most popular Hollywood leading men of the 1960’s, through to his death in 1980 from a heart attack following cancer surgery at the age of 50.
This will be Lake Forest Entertainment’s debut project. The company’s Graham Kaye will be producing along with Brian O’Shea (The Last Five Years) and Jeff Bowler (Minkow).
Although McQueen has been dead for many years, he will reportedly have a big influence on how this story is told. The actor wrote a diary of some kind around the time of his death and later passed on to Terrill. Mid-day quoted Kaye, explaining: “Something happened in McQueen’s life that has been kept secret for a long time. We think we have a very interesting way into this story.”
