‘The Maze Runner’ Sequel in the Works
Following the lucrative debut of The Maze Runner, Fox is wasting no time in planning a sequel.
Based on James Dashner’s YA novel of the same name, the thriller is about a group of teenaged boys attempting to find their way out of a huge maze while dodging the monstrous Grievers. The sequel will be based on the second book in the series, entitled Maze Runner: Scorch Trials. Minor spoiler alert: the main kids manage to escape, but their problems are far from over, as they brave a journey on the roads of a devastated planet and discover more about the origins of the maze.
The Maze Runner opened at $32.5 million domestically and initially earned $81.5 million worldwide. Described by some as a blend of Harry Potter, Lord of the Flies and TV’s Lost, the series about young people fighting to survive in a fantasy setting seems to have the most important elements for a popular dystopian film franchise.
According to reports, Dylan O’Brien, Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Kaya Scodelario will reprise their starring roles for Scorch Trials. Bryce Romero is rumored to be returning as well.
T.S. Nowlin, who co-wrote the screenplay for the first movie, is on board to write the sequel, and Wes Ball may be returning as director.
A release date of Sept. 18, 2015 has been set.
