The upcoming true crime feature film The Trials of White Boy Rick will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, known for TRON: Legacy and more recently for the Tom Cruise action/adventure flick Oblivion.
Based on an article by journalist Evan Hughes, this Universal production tells the story of Rick Wershe, a Detroit teen in the 1980s who, going by the name “White Boy Rick, became an infamous cocaine trafficker among the kingpins of the East Side. Despite the racial divide, Wershe was successful at selling drugs in this predominantly black area, but the most interesting thing about this story is the fact that he was working on both sides of the law. Wershe was an informant to the FBI and DEA while becoming one of the city’s biggest drug dealers.
Hughes’ article was published Sept. 29, 2014 on the website The Atavist. In addition to writing for prominent publications like The New York Times, Hughes also wrote the book Literary Brooklyn.
The picture will be produced by Dylan Clark, who previously worked with Kosinski on Oblivion, and by Ted producer Scott Stuber.
