‘Transformers 5’ Coming in 2017; Sequels Confirmed
Paramount announced release dates for three new Transformers sequels. Transformer 5 will hit theaters on June 23, 2017, and its follow-ups, Transformers 6 and 7, will follow in June 2018 and 2019, respectively.
Michael Bay will again take the reins for the fifth installment, but the director insists that it will be his last. “I’m doing Transformers 5,” Bay told Rolling Stone in January. “It’s fun to do a movie that 100 million people will see. But this is the last one. I have to pass the reins to someone else. J.J. [Abrams] told me, ‘You’re the only guy that could do this.’ But it’s time to move on. One more.”
Voice actor Mark Ryan, who brings Jetfire and Lockdown to life in the series, recently spoke to IGN about the upcoming film, hinting at two intertwining story lines: Age of Extinction‘s Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg) and his efforts to save Earth from a conspiracy between the Autobots and the Dinobots; and the never-ending war between the Autobots and Decepticons, which culminates in Optimus Prime confronting Unicron, the uber bad guy, also known as Lord of Chaos, who can transform into a planet. That’s right, a planet.
Transformers 6 will be the series’s first spin-off solo film. Surprisingly, it will not focus on Optimus, the leader of the team, but on Bumblebee. As Paramount exec Brad Grey told The Hollywood Reporter, “We will make the first movie with Michael and go right into a Bumblebee movie, which will be at a lower cost.”
“We’ve brought in a pretty strong writing staff, run by Akiva Goldsman, and they have put together eight or nine interesting stories,” added Grey. “So, between that group and Steven Spielberg’s guidance on a story level, these characters are a big business for us to pursue.”
