Use the Two-Stage Power Turn Drill to Crush the Ball Off the Tee
Any golfer can lower his or her score by driving the ball further off the tee. That’s easier said than done, but there are exercises and drills that can help develop the kind of explosive rotational power that’s needed to boom the ball long down the fairway.
PGA Tour strength coach Chris Noss trains pro golfers Rickie Fowler, Stewart Cink and Zach Johnson, along with other top pros. For anyone struggling to hit the ball a long way, he suggests the Two-Stage Power Turn Drill.
“This move loads the left leg, right hip and right shoulder,” says Noss. The first stage works on developing pure power, and the second stage helps increase club speed. The faster you can bring the club around, the more force you can transfer to the ball. View details of the drill in the video below.
Two-Stage Power Turn Drill
Stage 1
- Grab two irons and choke up on both in a golf stance with equal weight on both feet
- Repeatedly swing both clubs through the backswing and down, without going past the ball position
Coaching Points: Keep left arm straight through the movement // Press down through left foot as the load shifts to right hip
Sets/Reps: 2×10
Stage 2
- Hold one wedge upside down in a normal golf stance
- Pull the club back through the top of the backswing and through the impact zone quickly
Coaching Points: Turn right knee in slightly at the top of the backswing // Think of crushing a bug with the big toe of the right foot to maximize power
Sets/Reps: 2×15
