When an athlete joins a new team, one of his or her first decisions is what number to rock. How does one go about finding that perfect number?
Choosing a jersey number with a special meaning and value can help motivate and inspire an athlete. For example, Kansas City Chiefs RB Thomas Jones wears #20 in honor of his mother, who spent 20 years working in a coal mine to support her family. Whenever Jones suits up in the 2-0, he goes all out on the field for his mother and family.
Although Jones has an intense story behind his number, yours can be as simple as the number of your favorite player or one passed down from an older sibling. It can even be for sentimental reasons—a grandparent’s birthday, the number of siblings you have, etc.
So before you choose a random number with no meaning or reason (other than it looks good on you), take your time to think about what it can represent, because it will become synonymous with your on-field performance. With the right number, you’ll be motivated to give it your all every time you step on the battlefield. And if someone snags the number you wanted, you can always try to pay them off (it worked for Eli Manning).
