From 1992 to 2004, the De La Salle Spartans football team shattered American sports records by winning 151 games in a row. “The Streak” is an incredible part of high school football history, but perhaps even more fascinating than the record itself is what happened after the Spartans’ first loss. When the Game Stands Tall, a movie based on De La Salle’s true story, starts when The Streak ends. Spartans coach Bob Ladouceur (Jim Caviezel) must overcome a number of challenges, including the murder of a former player, a stroke and a community that’s not used to losing, to show his team what it takes to be great both on and off the field.
As the San Francisco Chronicle put it, “Many sports movies include scenes where coaches say that winning isn’t everything…and then they win everything. When the Game Stands Tall spends its entire 115 minutes proving that statement true.”
