One of the most intriguing details of fantasy football is the impact that quarterbacks can play on your roster. Unlike the real sport, the quarterback does not dictate the game in fantasy football. This has always been such a challenging topic when it comes to drafting your roster. Some leagues are fueled by wide receivers and other by running backs, but the QB is rarely the cornerstone of a league’s point system.

Great real-world QB’s don’t always make great fantasy players. Look at Alex Smith, he’s an impressive game manager who makes few mistakes and typically wins games. But his numbers are lame and don’t translate well to the fantasy football point system. (Try DRAFT on iOS or Android)

Sometimes, the better fantasy players are simply winning YOU games, not their real life teams. Take Jameis Winston, for example. The Bucs are a middle-of-the-road team, although improving each season, led by Winston. He puts up huge numbers with a nice mix of recklessness and fearlessness, taking high risks to yield high rewards on the field.

It can be a slippery slope when choosing a QB to head your roster, so below is a guide on where I feel the real value is.

Top 3

These are the bonafide superstars at the position. You don’t have to feel bad for choosing any of these guys in the first or second round.

Aaron Rodgers, Packers: Rodgers is arguably the best fantasy QB on the board. He’s expected to lead all leagues in points, by a long shot. With the addition of Martellus Bennett to his already dynamic offense.

Tom Brady, Patriots: Tom Brady, the GOAT, is still thriving in this league and shows no signs of slowing down. He picked up a new weapon in Brandin Cooks, but lost Julian Edelman to an ACL injury. Look for Brady to continue his greatness this season. He’s definitely worth a first- or second-round pick.

Drew Brees, Saints: Drew Brees is one of the most historically accurate QBs to ever play the game. Brees is actually projected to finish just behind Rodgers in overall fantasy points.

Bottom 3

Unless you have a league of 14-plus teams, there is absolutely no reason to have these guys on your roster, even as a backup. Leave them alone.

Blake Bortles, Jaguars: Bortles got benched in the preseason due to his less-than-stellar play, but Chad Henne failed to claim the starting role. The Jags will be going with Bortles in Week 1, but I think it is evident that he’s at the beginning of the end of his days as a starting QB in this league. Just ask anyone who drafted him last year.

Trevor Siemian, Broncos: Siemian had it rough last season, but didn’t perform awful given the circumstances. He’s in a major battle right now for the starting spot with Paxton Lynch, and it looks like it’s going to be a toss-up week by week. I’ve got him in my bottom 3 because I believe Lynch will steal that spot by week 5.

Mike Glennon, Bears: Glennon is going to have to pull off some magical things this season to earn that ridiculous contract the Bears paid him. Oh wait, and they traded up to draft a QB? Who knows what is going on in Chicago? I don’t trust anything about the Bears. Glennon will probably lose his starting job to Mitch Trubisky like he lost it to Jameis Winston a few years ago.

Sleeper 3

These guys may go late in the draft or even undrafted, but if you can sneak one of them on your roster it could pay off big time. These sleepers will exceed their expectations by a large amount this year.

Carson Wentz, Eagles: Wentz is a huge sleeper this year. With the addition of Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith, he’s got two new weapons to add to an already rolling offense. Wentz performed extremely well last season, and although it was a small sample size, he showed he can be the go-to guy in Philly.

Jameis Winston, Buccaneers: Forget sleeper, Winston is a must-have QB. He and Mike Evans are a dynamic one-two punch, but now he has the electrifying DeSean Jackson to launch the bombs to. Rookie Tight End, OJ Howard, will also make an immediate splash in The Bucs’ offense. Winston has always had impressive numbers, but this is the year he puts it all together and performs without the turnovers.

Tyrod Taylor, Bills: Over the last two years as a true starter in the NFL, Taylor has thrown for over 6,000 yards, rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 47 total touchdowns. The man is a production machine and that’s what you look for in a fantasy QB. He’s a dual threat, and improves his arm and his run game every year. If he’s around late in your draft, I’d snag him.
