An NFL Scout Said He’d Trade His Team’s Defense for Ohio State’s in a Heartbeat
Would you trade your favorite NFL team’s defense for the 2015 Ohio State defense?
According to NFL Network reporter Daniel Jeremiah, one anonymous NFL scout said he’d make the swap “in a heartbeat.”
“I was on the phone with [a scout] just the other day … he said, ‘I would trade our NFL defense right now for the Ohio State defense in a heartbeat. I’d do it right now,'” Jeremiah reported during NFL Network’s coverage of Ohio State’s Pro Day. “When you hear that you [think], ‘C’mon,’ but you start going through the three levels of the defense, and even some younger guys that aren’t eligible in this draft class. Oh my gosh, this is a loaded football team.”
You might immediately write off the idea as ridiculous; but if you think about the long-term prospects of each defensive player on the 2015 OSU roster, it’s not all that far-fetched. Let’s assume by “Ohio State defense,” the scout meant every defensive player on the team’s roster in 2015.
This year’s draft class is stacked with Ohio State defensive standouts. Joey Bosa, Eli Apple, Vonn Bell, Adolphus Washington, Joshua Perry and Darron Lee are all top-80 prospects, so that’s six potential starters right off the bat. OSU is also returning some elite players next season, such as defensive end Tyquan Lewis and linebacker Raekwon McMillan, and they have a number of highly touted recruits ready to step up and make an impact.
Although the Buckeyes defense might be the worst in the NFL for their first few seasons due to a lack of experience and depth, further down the road they could develop into a formidable unit. Anyway, it’s always fun to throw around hypotheticals while we’re killing time before the NFL Draft.
