Avengelyne Coming to the Silver Screen
Actress Gina Carano is teaming up with comic book writer Rob Liefeld to bring his creation, Avengelyne, to the silver screen, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The two drummed up excitement for the adaptation at Comic-Con over the weekend while interacting with fans.
The deadly heroine is not well-known among casual fans, and comic book fans have differing opinions on both Avengelyne and Liefeld. However, the character does have a backstory that could play well in theaters. Evicted from heaven, Avengelyne comes to earth to fight the forces of evil while attempting to locate and protect “The One,” a person who can save mankind from being overrun by the devil’s minions.
The film has potential for flashy action scenes, and Carano, a former MMA fighter, is more than capable of pulling them off with finesse. Unfortunately, there’s not much character development in the comics for filmmakers to work with. Some critics have derided the series as an excuse to create another heroine who, despite her ability to kick butt, is unable to find a piece of cloth that can cover her own. The search for the film’s writer and director will start next week.
Hollywood Reporter reports that Carano, who most recently appeared in Fast & Furious 6, and Liefeld want to make a movie along the lines of Kate Beckinsale’s Underworld. Do you think they can pull it off?
