A sequel to the hit comedy Bad Teacher is currently in the works. Cameron Diaz is expected to return in the starring role in Bad Teacher 2.
Director Jake Kasdan will return to helm the project. He also directed Diaz and Bad Teacher co-star Jason Segel in last summer’s Sex Tape, which turned out to be a disappointment at the box office. Writing the screenplay is Justin Malen, best known for his work on TV’s Trophy Wife.
There’s no word yet whether Segel, Justin Timberlake or Amy Punch, who turned in a memorable performance as nemesis Amy Squirrel, will return for the sequel.
Largely panned by critics, the movie was so well received by audiences that it spawned a short-lived TV series by the same name, which premiered on CBS earlier this year and starred Ari Graynor in the leading role.
In a press release, Columbia Pictures president of production Hannah Minghella talked about bringing in Malen to write the screenplay for Bad Teacher 2, saying: “We love Justin’s take on the material. It hits all the notes that made the first film such a breakthrough hit and also takes the characters in a new direction that is fresh and fun.”
