CBS Orders Series Based on ‘The Island of Dr. Moreau’
CBS has green-lighted a TV series titled Moreau, which is inspired by the famous H.G. Wells novel The Island of Dr. Moreau. The adaptation centers on the brilliant scientific visionary Dr. Katherine Moreau, who works at her privately funded island hospital. The series follows her as she revolutionizes medicine with bold experimental treatments.
One thing that differentiates the new TV drama from the original story is that the title character is a woman.
The show is being written and executive produced by Phillip Iscove, known for adapting another popular legend to TV, the Fox drama series Sleepy Hollow, which he left at the end of last season. Frank Marshall and Robert Zotnowski are also producing through the studio-based Kennedy/Marshall Company.
Wells’s classic sci-fi novel, published in 1896, is about Edward Prendick, who is shipwrecked on a mysterious island that is home to Dr. Moreau, a well-known but disgraced London physiologist. Dr. Moreau retreated to the island to perfect his “Beast Folk.” The scientist uses a controversial practice known as vivisection to turn animals into human-esque hybrids.
