A live-action version of Night on Bald Mountain is in the works at Walt Disney Pictures. The action-adventure thriller will center on the villainous Chernobog, also known as the infamous winged devil from the Night on Bald Mountain segment of the 1940’s animated film Fantasia.
Featured in the anthology film’s grand finale sequence, Chernobog was a giant demonic figure who awakens at midnight and raises spirits from the dead that wreak havoc throughout the night, before being banished during a bright dawn—to the compelling music of Franz Schubert’s Ave Maria.
It’s unusual to base an entire movie on one scene from an animated picture. However, the scene is particularly memorable, standing out because its frightening and disturbing aspects are so uncharacteristic of the content normally found in classic Disney films.
According to reports, filmmakers are planning to do something along the lines of the hugely successful Maleficent.
The screenplay is being written by collaborators Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who specialize in dark fantasy, making them a good fit for this picture. The duo, also executive producing the movie, are best known for writing last year’s Dracula Untold. Their upcoming films include the Vin Diesel fantasy flick The Last Witch Hunter, out Oct. 23, and Gods of Egypt, debuting April 8, 2016.
