Donald Glover Boards ‘Spider-Man Homecoming’
It has been confirmed that actor Donald Glover, best known for his work on TV’s Community and the recent hit film The Martian, is joining the cast of the highly anticipated feature Spider-Man Homecoming. The name of Glover’s character is undisclosed at this time, but it won’t be the actor’s first experience with a Spider-Man project. Just last year, he voiced Miles Morales/Ultimate Spider-Man in the TV series Ultimate Spider-Man.
Superhero fans had speculated about Glover boarding the movie for some time now. According to Deadline, “The big question that will be asked in the fanboy set is, what role is he playing? The talented young actor was at the center of a lot of social media conjecturing back when the project was solidifying, as many felt he would be an ideal candidate to play the Spidey character in his third major onscreen iteration.”
Tom Holland is set to star in the title role, while Robert Downey Jr. will reprise his character, Tony Stark—a.k.a. Iron Man.
The cast is predictably star-studded, with Michael Keaton playing Vulture, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Zendaya signed on for a mysterious role known as Michelle. The film’s plot is also a mystery, being kept carefully under wraps.
Directing is Jon Watts, best known for The Onion News Network TV series and more recently the 2015 crime thriller Cop Car. With characters by Steve Ditko and Stan Lee, the screenplay was written by in-demand collaborators John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein, who have teamed up on many projects, including the Horrible Bosses franchise.
Spider-Man Homecoming heads to theaters nationwide on July 7, 2017.
