Don’t Be Surprised If Julian Edelman Dominates as Patriots’ Backup QB
The New England Patriots are in a rough position with their quarterback situation. Suspended Tom Brady won’t be back until Week 5, and Jimmy Garoppolo injured his shoulder Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. That means that Patriots rookie quarterback Jacoby Brissett will most likely start Thursday’s game against the Houston Texans.

If Brissett doesn’t work out during the game, the Pats have a secret weapon who could come in at QB—Julian Edelman. That’s right, the 6-foot, 200-pound slot receiver is being prepped to be the team’s backup quarterback for Week 3.
The #Patriots have done extensive preparation over the past few days to get WR Julian Edelman ready as the backup QB. It may actually happen

During his three years at Kent State University, Edelman was a dual-threat quarterback. In his senior season with the Golden Flashes in 2008, he broke the school’s single-season total offense record and led the team in both passing and rushing yards. Edelman had 1,820 passing yards, 13 touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 118.8. He also rushed for 1,370 yards, 13 touchdowns and 6.4 yards per carry.

Edelman had a nice deep ball and showed great pocket awareness. Look at this .gif of him making four defenders miss and still getting the pass off. He looks like Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson before there was a Russell Wilson.
Edelman also has thrown a pass in the NFL. In a 2014 playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Patriots ran a trick play in which Edelman caught a pass from Brady and launched it downfield for a touchdown. That makes Edelman 1-1 in passing with a touchdown for 51-yards.

Bill O’Brien on Julian Edelman: “Wildcat QB @ Kent State, really good at it & I can remember doing some of those things w/ him in practice.”

It is still possible that Edelman will not play this week, but if he does, it will be interesting to watch. Check out more of his awesome college quarterback highlights below.
