‘Don’t Look Now’ Remake in the Works
A remake of the classic supernatural thriller Don’t Look Now is in the works at StudioCanal. The original atmospheric horror flick which premiered in 1973, starred Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie as a couple grieving the death of their young daughter, and begin to get ominous messages from the afterlife. They meet two Catholic nuns, one of whom is supposedly clairvoyant and claims she has been communicating with the spirit of their daughter. The nun passes along a warning to the couple from the hereafter, telling them their lives are in danger.
The film was an adaptation of a short story by renowned British author Daphne du Maurier, best known for writing the novels that served as the basis for two very memorable Alfred Hitchcock films: The Birds and Rebecca.
The Picture Company’s Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman, who have collaborated on such movies as Non-Stop and The Gunman, are producing this remake.
Although the 1973 feature continues to be a respected and highly praised film, many motion picture insiders are reacting negatively to the news that it will join the long list of horror flick remakes currently in development. Much of the criticism comes from those who feel that a reinterpretation is almost sure to fall short of the original. As Empire explains: “Any new film is going to have to struggle to match up to a piece of work that is full of sizzling sexuality and real terror. Good luck with that.”
