Dwayne Johnson to Star in ‘The Janson Directive’
Dwayne Johnson is in demand these days. The former WWE superstar has signed on to star in Universal Pictures’ upcoming adaptation of Robert Ludlum’s novel, The Janson Directive. Rumors started swirling about his involvement earlier this summer, and Johnson recently confirmed it on Twitter, revealing that the writer of 2001’s A Beautiful Mind will write the screenplay. “Academy Award winner Akiva Goldsman will write the script. Let’s roll,” he tweeted.
The film tells the story of former Navy SEAL and spy Paul Janson (Johnson) as he attempts to leave his government career in covert ops to start his own company. One failed mission puts him back in the government’s crosshairs, he gets pulled into a conspiracy and is pursued by his former bosses as he struggles to learn who’s behind it all. And if that sounds like a Jason Bourne plotline, there’s a good reason; the Bourne films are based on Ludlum’s novels as well.
The Janson Directive could be the key to Johnson getting an action franchise built around him. There are already whispers of a possible crossover between the Bourne series and the potential Janson series. But a release date hasn’t been announced thus far, and it’s unclear when The Rock will even have time. Filming for Fast and Furious 7 has wrapped, but Johnson will be promoting it around its release in April; he’s got G.I. Joe 3 currently in the works along with two Journey to the Center of the Earth sequels; and he was recently announced as Black Adam in DC’s upcoming Shazam film.
