Ah, the cheat meal. That elusive prize for athletes who spend their days monitoring their food intake as if it meant the difference between life and death. Whenever we ask an athlete about his or her favorite cheat meal, they respond in milliseconds. Examples include In-N-Out Burger, Popeye's and just about any assortment of candy you can think of. The cheat meal is to the athlete what a three-day weekend is to us regular folk.
Unfortunately, when you haven't consumed the trash that usually constitutes a cheat meal in a long time, it can turn on you in a hurry. That's what happened to Denver Broncos linebacker Von Miller this week, in what could be considered the most inopportune time of his career. As the Broncos prepared to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Divisional Playoffs this Sunday, Miller decided to spend his one off day, Tuesday, taking in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and indulging in his cheat meal. He gulped not one but two Icees to wash down some always delicious movie theater mozzarella sticks.
As you might expect, Miller's body cried out for help. He told the Denver Post that he began feeling sick before the movie ended, and it got so bad that he had to miss practice the following day.
"Can't put regular gas in a Ferrari. I learned that," said Miller.
The lesson? Never eat movie theater mozzarella sticks, no matter who you are.
