Holiday Break: The Perfect Time to Get Recruited
Winter break is a great time to relax without worrying about school, but don’t forget that it’s also an ideal time to work on being recruited.
It may be too late in the process for seniors, but for underclassmen just starting the recruiting process, here are some quick tips to get the most out of your break.
Narrow Down Your Schools
Underclassmen, it’s time to start compiling your short list of colleges. Fire up the computer, go online and research teams, coaches and schools [D-I, -II or -III] to see what they have to offer.
For seniors who haven’t yet settled on an institution of higher learning where they can advance their athletic and academic careers, now is the time to focus on the selection process. Once all your college applications are in, create a list of pros and cons for each school to help narrow down your search. If you haven’t used up all your recruiting trips, start planning so you can move forward and match up with the right school.
Create Highlight Video
For athletes looking to get noticed, your free time during break can be used to make highlight tapes and ship them out to coaches.
STACK’s resident recruiting maven, Zac Clark, recently broke down how to create a highlight video—a necessary element in your plan to get noticed by college coaches. For the full article, go to Create Your Own Highlight Video.
Sign up for Tests
Juniors, one of the biggest tests you need to take before picking your dream school is not the 40-Yard Dash, but the SAT or ACT. Sign up for one or both of these standardized tests. If you’ve already signed up and have a test date, it’s time to start preparing.
Sophomores, you can take the PSAT [Practice SAT], which will help you understand what the real test will be like.
Plan to take these standardized tests early during the second half of the school year. This will give you ample time to re-take the test if necessary to improve your scores. Find out SAT test dates here and ACT test dates here.
