‘Independence Day’ Sequel Pushed Back to 2016
We’ll have to wait another year for Roland Emmerich’s alien invasion to hit theaters. Originally slated for release in July 2015, Independence Day 2 is now scheduled to come out July 1, 2016. The new date nearly coincides with the first movie’s 20th anniversary.
The change isn’t much of a surprise. Emmerich said he needs more time to prepare, and 2015 is already crowded. He is currently working with writer Dean Devlin on two separate scripts for the movie—one with Will Smith reprising his role as Steven Hiller, and the other in case Smith cannot be brought on board. Bill Pullman and Jeff Goldblum are expected to return. There are also reports that rising star Michael B. Jordan is being considered for a role.
Earlier this year, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Emmerich explained how the aliens would return. He said, “The humans knew that one day the aliens would come back. And they know the only way you can really travel in space is through wormholes. So for the aliens, it could take two or three weeks, but for us, that’s 20 or 25 years.”
The battle won’t be the same though. “It’s a changed world,” Emmerich said. “It’s like parallel history. [Humans] have harnessed all this alien technology.”
Independence Day debuted on July 2, 1996 and garnered more than $800 million at the box office.
